Columbus Mechanical were appointed as principle contractor for this plant room re-fit. With this building being grade 1 listed; this one was a challenge from the outset.
Prior to any works being undertaken we carried out a full R & D survey on the existing plant room and isolated works areas. This highlighted some asbestos present, we employed Ipswich Insulations to undertake the safe removal of the identified asbestos.
Our first task for was a flue inspection to ensure the proposal was feasible, as we intended to re-line the existing chimney with a FuranFlex composite liner. Once this was successful, the safe removal of all existing plant in the boiler room could be undertaken.
Installation of the new plant room began following this, with one team installing the new plant room, and another team externally running the new 125mm gras main from the new gas meter and penetrating through to the plant room, for us to run our new 108mm stainless steel gas main to serve 2 no. new Hamworthy Purewell Variheat Mk 2 boilers. However, this was no ordinary excavation. With there being such historical significance around the hall, an archaeologist had to be in attendance to oversee a working brief to ensure we were not to disturb any items below ground and to record items found.
Following testing of the below ground services, a designed scaffold had to erected for specialist contractors to come to site to install the Furanflex flue.
Final testing and commissioning of the plant room took place on schedule, 8 weeks from the project commencing.
